Duke of Edinburgh camping equipment list





Below is the kit list for the Ten Tors Challenge which can also be used for Duke of Edinburgh Training
MINIMUM COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING FOR THE TEN TORS EXPEDITION 2008
  1. This Annex provides the equipment list and is based upon advice from the Mountain Training Leadership Board.  Whilst not wishing to prescribe individual manufacturers, examples are given to assist team members and managers in getting the clothing list correct before Ten Tors.  The list is sub-divided into the following areas:

  2. ALL the equipment and clothing listed below will be checked by the Scrutineers on the Friday of the Event and is liable to be checked at any time during the Event by Scrutineers (in which case the team's Route Card will be suitably annotated).  Whilst team members may choose to wear other styles of clothing for the Event, they must carry everything listed below.  Teams are strongly advised to work up their training schedules such that they are competent in carrying the full load - many teams / team members fallout simply through lack of stamina and experience of carrying such a load.   TEAM EQUIPMENT - PROVIDED AT REGISTRATION
  3. Each TEAM must have:
    1. A Route Card (FTT12)
    2. Two official Ten Tors Maps
    3. A Manned Locations Map (FTT13)
    4. A Team Identification Panel
    5. A set of ID wristbands
    6. Instructions for Teams Participating in Ten Tors (FTT3)
    TEAM EQUIPMENT - PROVIDED BY TEAM MEMBERS
  4. Each TEAM must have:

  6. Recommendation: base plate to be at least 10 cms.
  7. Torch2
  8. Rule: Normal filament torches are to have a minimum lens diameter of 3.5 cms;  torches employing LEDs are to have a minimum of 3 x LEDs.
    Recommendation: one torch per tent group.First Aid Kit2Recommendation: should include Band-Aid strips (6 cms wide), Zinc Oxide plaster (2.5 cm wide), 2 x 10 cm wide bandages, 2 x triangular bandages, 2 x Melolin gauze dressings, antiseptic wipes, blunt-nosed scissors, pain killers, Calamine cream, insect repellant, sunscreen.
    Individuals to carry blister treatment.Food2 lunches,
    2 main meals
  9. Rule: at least 1 main meal must be hot.  Convenience noodle-based food is not accepted as a main meal.  This rule implies a stove and fuel;  liquid fuel should be contained in a robust container with a secure stopper.
  10. Tents 2
  11. Rule: to provide complete shelter for the entire team.  Bivvy bags are not accepted.
    Tents are to be either of standard design (waterproof flysheet, non-waterproof inner and waterproof groundsheet) or a single skin waterproof design with built-in waterproof groundsheet.INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT
  12. Each PARTICIPANT must have:

  15. Rule: jacket to have an attached hood.  Both garments to have taped seams and to be of robust construction.

  17. Rule: should cover ears and top of head.

  19. Rule: to offer ankle support and have a Vibram-type sole.
  20. Gloves1 pair 
  21. Sleeping bag1
  22. Rule: to be in a waterproof bag.Water bottle1Recommendation: to be of stout construction and with a good stopper.  All water carrying systems are acceptable providing that they are serviceable.
  23. Whistle1 
  24. Water sterilisation tablets48 hours supply
  25. Rule: to be in date
  26. .Survival bag1
  27. Rule: of body length and manufactured from heavy duty plastic (garden fertiliser bag material).  Aluminium space blankets are NOT acceptable.
  28. Sleeping Mat1
  29. Rule: Rolled, thermal insulated and of body length.
  30. Reserve Food Pack1
  31. Rule: for emergency use only.
    Recommendation: to contain hot drink, high energy foodstuffs and to be wrapped separately from main food.
  32. CLOTHING
  33. Socks2 pair Base layer2
  34. Recommendation: Wicking type preferred; Cotton T-shirt is acceptable for base layer but not preferred.Shirt2
  35. Rule: Long sleeved and of substantial material.  Thick rugby shirt or sweatshirt is the acceptable minimum.
  36. Trousers2 pair
  37. Rule: To be robust and wind proof.  Typical acceptable standard is Army style light-weight green trousers.  Tracksters will ONLY be acceptable if EACH pair is accompanied by a set of thermal trousers.
  38. Jersey or Fleece Jacket2
  39. Rule: 2 lighter jerseys (e.g. sweatshirt) can be substituted in lieu of 1 "jersey" or "fleece jacket".
  40. N.B. Rule: Half of the above Clothing is to be wrapped in a waterproof bag as "Spare Clothing"; both halves of clothing are to be of similar standard.
    THE USE AND CARRIAGE OF MOBILE TELEPHONES AND GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS (GPS) BY PARTICIPANTS IN THE EXPEDITION, IS PROHIBITED.
